4 Oct 1916, troopship SS Gallia, torpedoed off Sardinia by German SM U-35. Sunk in 15-20 mins as magazine exploded, c.1,400 of 2,000 on board died. No distress signal sent as wireless disabled.

4 Oct 1918, big explosion at T. A. Gillespie Co. Shell Loading Plant in Morgan, Sayreville, New Jersey, United States. Killed c.100 people, injured 100s & destroyed 325 buildings.

Evening of 26 Sept 1918, while sailing alone through Bristol Channel toward Milford Haven to recoal, US cutter Tampa, torpedoed by German UB-91.

24 Sept 1917, having arrived on troopships Ulimaroa & Norman, on way from Plymouth to Sling Camp, 10 New Zealand soldiers hit & killed by London to Plymouth express.

23 Sept 1916, 12 Zeppelins attacked England. London hit by 3 airships.

22 Sept 1914, armoured cruisers HMS Aboukir, Cressy & Hogue sunk in 70 mins by German U-9 with loss of 1,397 men & 62 officers.

16 Sept 1918, following fire in one of her magazines & alarmed by a munitions ship being just 150 yards away, Vice-Admiral Keyes ordered that HMS Glatton, RN monitor, be scuttled to prevent explosion that would have devastated Dover. Of 305 crew, 79 were killed & injured 124

16 Sept 1917, RN submarine HMS G9 rammed & sunk off Norway by destroyer HMS Pasley. In the dark & heavy seas, G9 mistook Pasley for U-boat & fired 2 torpedoes. Of 31 crew only one rescued (initially thought 2B German PoW). G9 one of 8 RN submarines lost to friendly fire in #WW1.

15 Sept 1916, first ever tanks used in combat in Battle of Flers-Courcelette.

14 Sept 1918, British aircraft carrier HMS Argus completed. First carrier with unobstructed flight deck from stem to stern. Hangar & superstructure lay below flight deck. In 1918, hosted 21 planes, including Sopwith Cuckoos. Served in Operations Harpoon & Torch in 1942.
