But this can’t officially be categorized as one, due to the 47 inches of rain it receives each year.

It is highly suggested that visitors witness the natural spectacle between July and September. When the mirage-like ponds have formed. Although much of the park looks like a desert, it receives about 1,200 millimeters of rain each year, whereas deserts receive less than 250 millimeters.  January through May are the months when most of this rainfall occurs.
The park’s website claims that around two full days are required to explore the biggest lagoons in the park. Azul and Bonita recommend that only guided tours be undertaken in the area. So, access is not very difficult and is easiest from the town of Barreirinhas, near Maranhão. Jeeps are the best form of transport to handle the hilly terrain. Further, there are four endangered species in the park, maintaining an ecosystem with a variety of other species.
As many as 60,000 visitors visit Lençóis Maranhenses National Park each year. Horseback riding, surfing, and canoeing are some of the activities that can be found within the park. The unique area of Lençóis Maranhenses, with its amazing white sand dunes and lagoons between them, is a must-visit place. Some people stayed in a local village in an oasis and slept in hammocks, exploring this beautiful place for a few days.
